As an advocacy organization, the Academy speaks out for physicians on legislative and reimbursement issues affecting the practice of medicine. Members are kept informed of issues and activities through the monthly newsletter, Cincinnati Medicine Digest. In addition, the Academy publishes the annual Medical Directory of Greater Cincinnati, considered the region’s most relied upon medical reference directory.
The Academy also sponsors programs and continuing medical education activities for physicians and others in the health care community, as well as travel and special events for members and their guests.
The Academy assists physicians in the management of their busy practices by offering a variety of services and benefits including alliances with local businesses to provide special discounts and savings to members.
Additionally the Academy works to link member physicians with patients and the community at large. The Academy offers a physician referral service for community members looking for a physician in the area. An average of 240 referrals are given out per month. Along with the referral service, patients are served through the Academy of Medicine’s involvement in a variety of health care related associations in the area, e.g., the St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy, Access Health 100, the Doctor’s Foundation, to name a few.
Improving Cincinnati’s health care services through philanthropic contributions to area health organizations is the primary role of the non-profit Academy Foundation. Established by the Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati in 1960, the Academy Foundation funds local programs for emergency care; child/elderly welfare; public health; education/communication for the public; education/training for health care professionals; and research, applied and basic. Donations to the Academy Foundation are welcome and tax deductible.
