Reflecting on the past year

RouanGreg2016 200The Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati has grown and developed over the past several years following the implementation of a strategic plan that allowed us to tactically add value and address the needs of our membership. This was a result of the dedication of our staff and physician leaders.
In 2011, Dr. Tom Maynard reached out to me asking whether I would be interested in learning about the Academy. I owe him a debt of gratitude, as my experience with the Academy has been a journey that has been extremely rewarding personally and professionally. I have served on Council since 2012 and was privileged to be president in 2017-2018.
With the help of past presidents including Drs. Andy Markowitz and Raj Minhas along with our current president and president-elect, Drs. Carol Egner and Matt Hardin, your Council leadership has been and is now extremely well positioned to add value for you, our members. Very importantly we were able to recruit an absolutely remarkable executive director, Natalie Peterson. She helped to reinvigorate and innovate the operations model and budget of the Academy in collaboration with our longstanding and devoted staff Pam Fairbanks and Nancy Coomer.
Academy membership is increasing for the first time in over a decade. Finances are now on solid footing with a balanced budget, also for the first time in over a decade or more. The Annual Meeting attendance is at an all-time high for the past two consecutive years, and margins associated with the event are also positive. We remain active and aligned with the OSMA and participate in PAC activities at least at the state level. Recent social events, including the spring Keeneland trip and summer Cincinnati Reds baseball outing, have been consistently sold out. The Academy is involved with and helps lead the Cincinnati Coalition for Physician Wellness throughout our southwest Ohio region. This is an example of a best practice that is now being mirrored throughout the state of Ohio. Finally, Dr. Haleem Chaudhary, one of our Council members, is leading the effort for our first annual Academy golf outing at Maketewah Country Club on June 10, 2019. Please save the date for that event.
Sadly we lost one of most devoted members and friends this past year, Dr. Marvin Rorick. We recognized his contributions to the Academy with the distinguished service award at our annual meeting this fall. His family attended and were most grateful. His wife spoke at the event.
We want to hear from you. Your leadership not only has fiduciary responsibility for the organization, but a duty to be responsive to your needs. We have expanded our Council to include resident representatives from health systems throughout the city. It is a priority that all of our constituents are represented on the Council, with diversity as a prime component. Please consider becoming active in the Academy and do reach out to Natalie Peterson via email ( or by phone (513-421-7010, ext. 333). Also please think about reaching out to your colleagues and asking them to consider membership in the Academy, as Tom Maynard did for me in 2011.
